How do students perceive mathematics in college? How does this perception influence their learning? What is math anxiety? What are the causes of math anxiety? What are different attitudes toward mathematics? How do these attitudes affect learning mathematics?
This session, presented by RRC instructor Jack Kennedy, will answer these questions and provide an overview of psychological research into the role attitudes play in student’s mathematics achievement. He will explore some of the cognitive, affective, behavioral, and biological aspects of students’ attitudes; how attitudes contribute to the development of math anxiety; and some techniques educators can employ to change their students’ perceptions of learning math.
