Rebels Weekend Wrap -November 7 – 9

Another busy weekend for Rebels Athletics with both men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball teams competing in multiple games.

The Rebels men’s basketball team remain undefeated in MCAC league play, first defeating the CMU Blazers 90-60 Friday night at the Loewen Athletic Centre. The men’s team followed up with a 73-54 win over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Read More →

Trick or Treat Night for Rebels Volleyball

It was tricks and treats for Rebels Volleyball on Halloween as the Red River squads split a pair of games againstUniversity of St.Boniface .

The Rebels men’s team provided the treats on Friday defeating the USB Rouge 3-1 (25-21,17-25,25-15,25-19), improving their MCAC league record to 2-0. Coach Erik Hansen on the win “Jon Sedor played well, racking up a lot of digs tonight. We won the big rally points when we needed them.”

The women’s team did not enjoy the same success as the men’s team, losing to the Rouge 3-1 (25-20,20-25,23-25,25-27). Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at home hosting Providence University College starting at noon.

More fun = Better grades

As a student I was always looking for ways to get better marks and if possible with less work. Little did I know that shooting hoops with my friends and playing co-ed intramural volleyball was doing exactly that.

A recent article quoted a study from Purdue showed students “who visited rec facilities 15 times or more earned 3.08 GPAs, compared with 2.81 for those who made no visits.” Further evidence for the benefits of visiting your campus recreation centre are shown in a study that “Recreational sports and fitness center members achieved higher GPAs and completed more credits than nonmembers.” Read More →

Rebels Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Fall Short in MCAC Finals

Undefeated and Undisputed: The 2014 MCAC Soccer Champions are Crowned

While one celebrated a three-peat, the other celebrated the long road of an undefeated season, as the Providence University College Pilots women’s team, and the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges men are the 2014 MCAC Champions.

For Providence, this was their third straight title, and an especially sweet one in front of their home crowd. But for Saint-Boniface, the howling winds weren’t even close to muting their celebration, as not only can they call themselves “Undefeated”, but they can now call themselves “Champions”. Read More →

Rebels Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Advance to MCAC Finals

It wasn’t until the sun hit the horizon, but after a full day of soccer, tomorrow’s MCAC Championship matches are officially set in stone. Tomorrow at Providence University College it will be the Providence Pilots taking on the Red River Rebels in the women’s final, and the undefeated Saint-Boniface Les Rouges taking on the Rebel’s on the men’s side. As todays Final Fours got underway, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) revealed its All-Conference Teams and Most Valuable Players in both men’s and women’s soccer to fans, players, and coaches at Providence University College.

Rebels Start Season Strong

The Rebels Women’s basketball team looked every bit the defending champ on opening night, defeating the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 57-23 in front of a loud crowd at Notre Dame Campus. The Wesmen are returning to MCAC league play after a year away, and looked rusty at times and the Rebels took full advantage. Rookie guard Zeralynn Panesa had a terrific first game scoring 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assistants and whopping 9 steals. Veteran forward Selamawit Andu lead the team in scoring with 13 points while Susanna Namgung chipped in with 9. Next up for the Rebels is next Saturday, November 1st at home against Providence University College starting at 6:00PM.

The Six-Time defending MCAC Men’s Champions Red River College Rebels looked very sharp in their opening game as well, beating the UofW Wesmen 83-64.Ivan Griffths led all scorers with 21 points while Jonathan Wilner and Taylor Brown each added 11 points. Their next game is at home against Providence next Saturday, November 1 at 8:00PM.
