Rebels Women’s Soccer hold Alumni game on Sunday

On a hot and humid Sunday afternoon the RRC Alumni team defeated the Rebels 2-1.  The pre-game excitement level and camaraderie on the Alumni bench was very evident, while the Rebels were more serious minded as they prepared to play their first game together.  The play was balanced, with both teams showing good possession work and generating good scoring chances.

The Alumni had a dangerous scoring opportunity in the 28th minute with a free kick given on the edge of the box.  The Rebel wall stood strong and blocked the shot.  The Alumni opened the scoring with Jessica Lister (Soccer MVP 2015) finding net with a great strike in the 47th minute.  The Rebels tied it up less than a minute later when Nina Morris won a tough physical battle with a defender in the box to win the space she needed in close to get her shot away and find net.  Alumni GK Addison Zeltins (MCAC Soccer and Futsal Champion GK 2015/16) came up huge for the Alumni in the 58th minute with a brilliant finger tip deflection over the bar on a shot by Madison Kaatz that was clearly destined for the far top corner.

The Alumni went ahead for good late in the game with Karla Henuset (Futsal MVP 2015) unleashing a brilliant left foot strike from just outside the box to find the low left corner of the net.  Says Head Coach Doug Lawrie, “I was very pleased and proud to see our Alumni come together to give us this crucial pre-season game.  The Rebels showed well in their first game together, but the game also gave us a chance to see some of the areas we will need to work on.”

The Women Rebels Soccer team is still looking for additional players to fill out their roster.  Open Tryouts are Tuesday 29 Aug, 5:30 in the North Gym; and Wednesday 30 Aug, 5:30 on the fields at NDC.
