Welcome to the Red River College Language Training Centre Steinbach part-time program. This program aims to improve your English in order to find employment, to enter academic programs, and for everyday living in Canada.
Registration and Placement Test
You can register at any time, but placement tests are scheduled in Steinbach approximately once a month. Please contact us to arrange a placement test. Please allow 2.5 hours for the Placement Test. The Placement Test helps us know which class is best for you. Please bring your Permanent Resident document or card.
After completing the Placement Test new students can start each week at the beginning of a session, and then monthly after that. New students can only begin classes Monday mornings/afternoons and Tuesday evenings in Steinbach. Lorette evening classes begin on Mondays.
Classes are free for Permanent Residents and Refugees. We have free on-site childcare. The Government of Canada (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – IRCC) pays for these classes.
Regular attendance is important for your progress in English. You must attend 80% of your classes to stay in the program. Attendance is taken daily. Warning letters will be given to morning or afternoon students who are absent more than three classes (nine hours). Warning letters will be given to evening students who are absent more than two classes (six hours).
If you need to be absent because of sickness, work or family obligations, please speak to your teacher and the office staff – you will still be counted as absent, but it is helpful for them to have this information. If you cannot attend regularly, we will discuss options for a better time and program for you.
If you are late or leave early this time will be subtracted from your hours of attendance. Three hours equals one absence.
Childcare is provided for parents with children 19 months to 5 years who are in morning classes. Bring your family medical card at registration. Bring diapers, a change of clothes, snacks and indoor shoes for your children. Note that no childcare is offered in afternoons and evenings.
Student Progress Reports
You will receive a Canadian Language Benchmarks Progress Report at the end of each session (January and June) or if you leave the program. You must have a minimum of 150 hours of class instruction and an adequate amount of assessments in your portfolio to receive a Progress Report. For hours to be counted towards a Progress Report from more than one session, you must study continuously in the program.
LINC certificates are given at the same time as the Student Progress Reports and follow the same rules. LINC Certificates can be used for proof of language for Canadian Citizenship. The Canadian Government requires completed level 4s in Listening and Speaking. If you are studying English in the program to gain citizenship, please talk to the office, so that they can give you more important information.
- Turn off cellphones while in class. Please let family and friends know that you do not want to receive phone calls during class time.
- No smoking is allowed in our building.
- Our program is a scent-free environment. Please do not wear any perfume, cologne or fragrance.
