International Human Rights Day

Celebrate International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2016

2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the landmark United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Did you know Canada played a key role in the development of this Convention?

In Canada we understand the rights of access are human rights; that rights of protection around gender, gender identity, gender expression and orientation/attraction are human rights; that rights of protection around religion, spiritual and or political beliefs are human rights.  We also understand that these rights are interconnected and they all come with responsibilities. For each other and ourselves.

International Human Rights Day is a great day to discover how the rights of diversely abled people have been realized, and where challenges remain.

Enjoy free admission to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (#AtCMHR!)   to explore the galleries and participate in family-focused programming to explore ideas of inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.

A note for people with allergies: Programming for International Human Rights Day includes the presence of guide dogs.

Rock the Rainbow -LGBTT* Awareness & Ally Training – December 1st

November 23, 2016 • Written by

If you have ever wanted to learn more about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two Spirit people and their place in Canadian Culture, this session is for you.

LGBTT* individuals often feel unwelcome and excluded, and they look for behaviours and signs that may indicate whether or not people will support and welcome them as LGBTT* individuals.

The Awareness & Ally Project seeks to create a safer, welcoming, and supportive environment for LGBTT* people by helping to raise the awareness and understanding of gender and sexual diversity. It also provides an opportunity for those who wish to be proactive in helping to create a respectful environment at the College for LGBTT* people, their friends and families by becoming an Ally.  Becoming an Ally is simple and it means being a person who they can trust and with whom they can be open.

The College provides both online and live training opportunities for students. For those interested in the attending the live training, they do need to secure permission from their instructors to miss classes for the full day. In that past, some students depending on the type of program they are in, were able to gain recognition of attending the event for their course. As always, check with your instructors to learn about the options that are best suited for your program.

The 1-day Awareness & Ally Training provides participants and potential Allies with knowledge and tools to increase their understanding of gender and sexual diversity.

Date: December 1st, 2016

Time: 8:30am – 3:30pm

Location: P 107, Exchange District Campus

Facilitator: Bradley West (Red River College)

Red River College offers this Ally Training as part of the LGBTT* Initiative, coordinated by the Diversity and Intercultural Services. For more information, please contact Bradley West, Diversity Initiatives Coordinator at 204.632.2016 or bcwest@rrc.ca.
