Library and Information Technology

The Library and Information Technology Program provides students with the necessary public service and technical skills to be a productive employee in library and other related fields. This program will provide graduates with the training necessary to be employed as library technicians.

Students learn the fundamentals of acquiring, organizing, and disseminating information in a variety of formats. Academic courses are directed towards broadening students’ general knowledge in order to enhance their ability to function effectively in an information environment.

Work placements are directed towards helping students achieve hands-on experience and knowledge of the working environment of a library technician. Students participate in three two-week work placements in their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th semesters of the program.

Technicians occupy mid-range positions with a level of responsibility between that of a clerk and a librarian. They may direct clerks, student assistants or other library technicians. Library technicians are employed in all types of libraries: academic (college and university), public, school, and special (government, business, industry, the professions, etc.). They also work at library related jobs such as records management.

Opportunities also exist in fields such as corporate or political research, publishing, computerized information systems and bibliographic utilities.

Oral presentations, written assignments, and group projects are all part of the program.

Who Should Enroll?

Library technicians are team players and work closely with the public. They must have better-than-average command of oral and written English language communication skills.

Technicians should have very good organizational skills, demonstrate initiative, and possess a flexible attitude. They frequently work with computers and a variety of other technologies, they must pay close attention to detail, and they must complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy.

Graduate Profile

The Library and Information Technology graduate:

  • Performs records management skills be developing inventories and retention schedules, preparing records for storage, and creating descriptions of archival materials.
  • Discusses, interprets and evaluates a variety of literature to assist patrons in finding materials appropriate to their needs.
  • Demonstrates circulation skills including management of materials, maintenance of patron databases, facilitation of inter-library loans, and shelf reading.
  • Applies basic accounting knowledge to purchase and receive materials for different collections.
  • Develops library collections through analysis, selection and inventory of resources, and collection policy including handling challenges to resources.
  • Communicates effectively using appropriate tools: visually, orally, and in writing through active participation, listening, and by asking questions at the level of the audience.
  • Applies reference skills in patron interviews and resource recommendations by using appropriate technology.
  • Utilizes social media and office software in a variety of formats.
  • Creates bibliographic records in manual and automated environments for material in different formats according to international standards.
  • Uses supervisory skills to assist in the hiring, training, managing, and motivating of staff and volunteers.
  • Assists in managing facilities including preparing schedules, maintaining security, arranging for building accessibility, and preparing/implementing a plan to respond to accidents and disasters.
  • Demonstrates adaptability, creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness individually and as part of a team.
  • Creates and implements programs and marketing strategies to promote literacy and the library.
  • Demonstrates professionalism through: time management, participation in professional organizations, adherence to privacy and workplace health and safety legislation, respect for diversity and a commitment to lifelong learning.
