RRC has been involved in applied research in sustainable vehicles since 2004, building the facilities, tools, and technical expertise to serve the testing and demonstration needs of firms in the automotive sector – including both passenger and heavy vehicles.

Manitoba is a major transportation hub for North America with a strong manufacturing presence comprising about 10 per cent of Manitoba’s manufacturing workforce. Heavy vehicle manufacturing products account for approximately $1 billion of the province’s almost $7 billion total manufacturing exports.

Through previous applied research projects, RRC’s faculty, staff and students have demonstrated technical capabilities in vehicle technology involving the use of: conventional fuels, solar energy, bio-diesel, hydrogen, hybrid hydrogen, compressed natural gas and electric and plug-in hybrid electric technology; engine/transmission integration (to meet stringent environmental requirements), as well as demonstration and evaluation projects involving multiple national and international partners.

The Electric Vehicle Technology & Education Centre (EVTEC) is being developed with the support of the Province of Manitoba to help test and demonstrate electric vehicle technologies, while allowing Red River College to enhance its applied research and training programs. Catalyzing this initiative has been the Province’s collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, New Flyer Industries, Manitoba Hydro, and RRC on the $3-million, three-year project to develop an all-electric transit bus and charging system.

ATEClogoThe Advanced Transportation & Energy Centre (ATEC) is a 3,000 sq. ft. research facility at Red River College that was established to help address the issues of emissions reduction and the integration of alternative, renewable sources of fuels for the transportation sector. ATEC’s mission is to: support innovation in the transportation industry; introduce new vehicle technologies through applied research; and train the next generation of skilled workers to ensure the successful commercialization of new innovations.

Agile, Scrum and WIKISPEED10th Anniversary Applied Researchv2

JOE JUSTICE of Team WIKISPEED was in Winnipeg in 2013 to lead 200 participants in the building of a car during the first workshop of its kind ever held in Canada: WINNISPEED. The 100+ mile-per-gallon prototype car that Team WIKISPEED created in just three months was built from scratch during the workshop.
